Written Analysis
1. Which question you chose, and how you think this exemplifies or responds to the project prompt as a metaphor, synecdoche or metonymy, or if it addresses all.
I choose to do a synecdoche reference to LGBTQ marches in the past and how our ancestors stick with us even in the present. I found an image of two people walking by a large group of cops at a Pride event to also reference the significance of police influence on queer people and their events. By including phantoms of queer activists in the image, I draw attention to the relationship between the past of the LGBTQ community and the present.
2. Discuss three of your visual choices with respect to how you think they relate to the given convention. In other words why did you make those choices? and why do you think ( or hope ) that they visually communicate what they do.
The main visual choice I made was to have the past LGBTQ activists appear ghost-like. I made this decision to show how our ancestors stick with us even today, watching over us and paving the way. We remember them and appreciate their sacrifices. But even though things have moved in better directions, we still face similar trials and intervention from different groups, including the police. Because of this, I wanted to place most of the activists either beside the people of the present or between them and the cops. The only one not in one of those positions is Harvey Milk, who is placed above and behind them, yelling and cheering on the people of the present. Harvey’s story as a gay politician who fought for LGBTQ rights and was assassinated for it is reflected in his image and positioning. He represents those who have been failed by the police who are meant to be the public’s protectors, but also activists who recognize the strides we have made and push for more.
3. What was the most difficult thing about creating your project? please elaborate. was there anything you wish you had done differently?
The most difficult aspects of this project was finding images of activists that would work within my chosen background. The other difficult aspect, once I had found the images, was figuring out how to make them look like ghosts. I went through a couple effects before finding one I liked and tried to keep it mostly uniform for each image with slight variation.
